Five Apps, Six Rounds and No Prizes for Participation
The days when short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity passed some time ago. Per Sensor Tower, the category generated about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue in Q1 2025, with 49% of it coming from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026. Search a store for a short reels app and you will come across at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, the apps seem identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or watch Contractual Heart 2077 two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. Dig deeper, though, and they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that affect what you pay and where you can watch. Relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026, we put them through six rounds and named a winner in each.
The Side-by-Side Comparison Grid
This grid puts the whole field on one screen before the rounds begin. The prices are taken from the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. A cell reading “not reported” means no reliable source published the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid is the scoreboard, and the rounds below provide the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. According to MPA, its 2025 revenue came to $785M, with $1.05B projected for 2026. Singapore’s StoryMatrix operates DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave (often mistyped as “dreamwave”) is the youngest app here, but it already holds about 13%, and reportedly its annualized revenue passed $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax seems to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. GoodShort, for context, has about 6% and sits just outside this field. Winner: ReelShort, on market share, but only narrowly.
Round 2: Price
This is the round where the apps seem most alike. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer an auto-renewing weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. Taking a different route, DramaBox sells auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99 is the standout, since it is the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, and that means a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Country, platform and promotion all affect prices, so the number on your screen may differ. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Free Options
The marketing turns loud and the details grow thin around free viewing. ReelShort’s own blog notes that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. A seven-day check-in streak brings 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Never treat look-alike sites, modded APKs or “unlimited coins” generators as a safe shortcut; they are unofficial, so keep away. Free options exist on DramaBox too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, with a clear lead.
Round 4: Devices and Platforms
When it comes to screens, these apps genuinely split apart. ReelShort covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama has one for tvOS 18 or later, which is its trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama taking the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
On raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. Reports say more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most interesting pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.
Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print
DramaWave runs away with this one. Its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. For viewers who switch between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. The fine print deserves a look too, since it varies more than the prices do. Whichever app you use, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings rather than deleting it, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave, with room to spare.
Best For: Our Final Picks
No single short drama app takes every round, so the best choice depends on how you watch. My Drama is best for Apple TV, as it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, as it pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. On sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that dwarf everything else in the grid. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. For free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort is best again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
